JPMorgan Chase will directly invest up to $10 billion in strategically important U.S. companies with national security implications. The investment plan, unveiled Monday, will focus on four key areas: supply chains and critical minerals, pharmaceutical precursors and advanced manufacturing in robotics; defense and space; energy independence including battery storage and grid resilience investments; and strategic technology including artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and quantum computing. This investment is part of the bank’s broader security and resilience initiative, a 10-year, $1.5 trillion plan to support, finance, and invest in industries critical to national security. “Security,” Chairman and CEO Jamie Dimon said in a statement, “Our security relies on the strength and resilience of the U.S. economy. America needs more speed and investment.” This summer, JPMorgan helped put together a deal under which the Department of Defense agreed to invest $400 million in U.S. rare earth company MP Materials. The bank is also providing financing for MP Materials’ second magnet manufacturing center in the U.S. The country’s largest bank plans to provide approximately $1 trillion in funding over the next decade to assist clients in these industries. JPMorgan Chase is now looking to increase that amount by $500 billion, or 50%, with additional resources and capital. “America needs more speed and investment,” Dimon said. “That also means removing obstacles in our path: excessive regulation, bureaucratic delays, partisan gridlock, and an education system that is out of step with the skills we need.” JPMorgan says it serves 34,000 middle market companies and over 90% of the Fortune 500. It plans to hire more bankers, investment professionals, and other experts to help facilitate the processing of the investment plan. It will also establish an external advisory board that includes leaders from the public and private sectors to help guide long-term strategy.
