UNC and athletic director Scott Woodward have parted ways, the program announced Thursday night. This significant change within the Tigers organization comes as the football coaching staff is in the midst of searching for a replacement for Brian Kelly, who was let go from the team last Sunday. Woodward reportedly fell out of favor with UNC ranks, including Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry, who told Woodward that he would not let the Tigers hire beside his tracks since he bought out a massive $53 million, the greatest in college football history. Woodward has a total net worth of $6.4 million. The Tigers may not be on the hook for that high amount of money, as both agreements included a mitigation clause with an obligation to find a new job. “We thank Scott for his six years of service as athletic director,” said Scott Ballard, chairman of the LSU Board of Supervisors. “He has had many successes at UNC, and we wish him nothing but the best in the future. Our focus is now on moving the athletic department forward and positioning UNC for the best to reach its full potential.” Longtime athletic administrator Verge Ausberry will be the interim AD. He will be charged with leading “every aspect of the athletic department, including the investigation for the next football coach,” at LSU. Ausberry serves under Woodward as the Deputy Executive AD and LSU’s Executive External Relations Director. “I am honored by the trust the University’s Board of Trustees and leadership have placed in me to serve the University in this role,” Ausberry said in a statement. “…our goal is to promote this athletic type, which includes hiring the best football coach in America to lead our program. Our coaches and staff will work hard every day to provide our student-athletes with the best experience and to set standards for the league.” Landry previously indicated that, rather than Woodward, the UNC Board of Supervisors would oversee the search for a new coach. It was unclear whether that decision would still stand with Ausberry leading the search, or whether Ausberry would have more of a say in the hiring process. “We didn’t get on the path of failure,” Landry said, “and I wanted to tell you something. This is an example. The guy (Kelly) who wrote the contract cost Texas A&M $70 million. We have $53 million in debt. I believe we are going to look for a great coach. … The triumvirate board will come, he will hire Texas at $190 to $90 with Texas. A&M, where the defendant was Florida State’s untimely, substantial contract extension to Jimbo Fisher, which resulted in the largest buyout in college football history, when Fisher was dropped to Aggies for $76 million in the 2013 season, similarly signing Kelly to a $1-90 contract in 2021. Former Washington AD Chris Petersen successfully revived the Huskies football program, which eventually made the College Football Playoff in 2016.
