In Portugal, an American tourist was killed and another seriously injured in a stabbing incident that occurred early Wednesday morning after a heated verbal argument escalated. According to the Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manhã, the incident happened around 3 a.m. in Cascais, about 20 miles west of Lisbon, as the victims were returning to their hotel. The report, based on information from the Portuguese Judicial Police, states that the confrontation turned into a violent fight after an argument between three suspects and the two victims. A heated argument turned violent early Wednesday morning in Portugal, resulting in the death of one American tourist and serious injuries to another following a stabbing attack. TVI Noticias reports that during the argument, one of the suspects allegedly went to his car, retrieved a bladed weapon, and stabbed the two tourists. Authorities stated that the attacker “struck the victims several times in the face, hands, and back” before fleeing the scene. Paramedics from Portugal’s National Institute for Medical Emergency (INEM) arrived at the scene and attempted to resuscitate one of the men, but the man’s stab wounds were too severe and had ruptured vital organs. He was pronounced dead at the scene. First responders transported the second victim, who had deep cuts to his face and arm, to Santa Maria Hospital in Lisbon.

The incident occurred around 3 a.m. in Cascais, about 20 miles west of Lisbon, as the victims were returning to their hotel. TVI Noticias reports that the surviving victim told police that the three suspects approached “without any prior interaction” and “tried to provocatively touch the victim’s hat,” police also told Correio da Manhã. When he told them to stop, one of the suspects allegedly punched him in the face. The man then contacted his fiancé, who was at a nearby nightclub, for help. Hospital officials told CNN that his condition was initially serious but later stabilized. The identity of the deceased has not been publicly released. Authorities stated that the attacker “struck the victims several times in the face, hands, and back” before fleeing the scene. TVI Noticias reported that officials announced Thursday they had arrested a suspect charged in the stabbing. Investigators have ruled out robbery as a motive for the attack, as well as any connection to a hate crime. After identifying the group involved, investigators have only charged one suspect; the suspect is a 23-year-old Portuguese man with no prior criminal record who reportedly worked at a nearby bar. Authorities stated that they are continuing to gather evidence as the investigation progresses.

A State Department spokesperson told Fox News that the agency “takes seriously its commitment to protecting U.S. citizens abroad” and is ready to provide consular assistance. Portugal’s current travel advisory level is 1; this means visitors should exercise normal precautions while in the European country. The deadly stabbing in Portugal comes just days after the Department of Foreign Affairs issued a revised travel advisory for the Republic of Maldives on October 7. The alert warned that “terrorist groups may conduct attacks with little or no warning,” including on remote islands where emergency response times may be delayed.
