An explosive device detonated under the car parked outside the home of one of Italy’s leading investigative journalists, triggering condemnation from Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and others on Friday. No one was injured. The investigative series, Report, on Italy’s state-run RAI3, said the explosion damaged Sigfrido Ranucci’s car overnight, as well as a second family car and an adjacent house in Pomezia, south of Rome. The report stated the blast was powerful enough to have killed anyone passing by.

Police and fire crews are reportedly investigating. Meloni expressed solidarity with Report host Ranucci and condemned what she called “a serious act of intimidation.” In a statement, she said, “Freedom of information and the independence are fundamental values of our democracy, and we will continue to defend them.” The explosion also damaged a second family car and an adjacent home in Pomezia, south of Rome.

Report is one of the few investigative programs on Italian television and routinely broadcasts news involving Italian politicians, business leaders and public figures. This week, Ranucci was acquitted from the latest defamation lawsuit he faced over a Report story.
