A Norwegian Cruise Line ship, the Norwegian Epic, rescued over 60 migrants stranded on a sailboat off the coast of Greece last week, according to officials and passengers. The cruise ship diverted from its course on October 22nd to respond to a “necessary” search and rescue operation in coordination with Greek authorities. The company told USA Today that they “safely brought 63 people onboard.”
Passengers reported that the cruise ship rescued the migrants from a sailboat off the coast of Greece. Once onboard, the crew provided “medical assessments, food and other supplies for their comfort,” according to Norwegian.
“Following the mandatory directions from the Rescue Coordination Center, the vessel sailed to Kalamata, Greece, where the rescued individuals were disembarked and handed over to the Greek authorities,” the cruise line said in a statement.
While the cruise line did not share information about who was rescued, other passengers shared on social media that they were migrants on a 30-meter sailboat. The 11-day cruise departed from Civitavecchia, Italy on October 21st and is scheduled to make stops around the Mediterranean in Greece, Malta, Italy and France, according to CruiseMapper.
After handing the migrants over to Greek authorities, the ship, which can accommodate 4,000 guests, continued on its planned route. Norwegian stated, “We appreciate our guests’ patience and understanding during this unexpected disruption to their voyage.”
