The Falcons defense has been surprisingly stout this season, allowing one of the fewest points per game and ranking in the top ten in average yards allowed per game. According to TruMedia, they are also seventh in opponent Expected Points Added (EPA) per play. However, the context of these statistics is crucial. They have faced Baker Mayfield (Bucs), Jordan Love (Packers), and backup quarterbacks like Joshua Dobbs and Desmond Ridder. None of these opponents possess the skill set of Josh Allen and the Bills.

The Bills are also adept at exploiting weaknesses, particularly against run defenses, which the Falcons have struggled with despite their overall defensive success. Atlanta currently ranks 27th in rushing defense. This year, the Bills have focused on running the ball with Allen and James Cook, who averages 5.0 yards per carry and ranks among the top 33 players with 50+ carries in rushing win rate. Cook excels at gaining yards before and after contact, proving remarkably difficult to bring down. The Falcons have limited explosive runs so far, allowing only five runs of 12+ yards in the first four games. This will be the most challenging test to date.

Atlanta’s pass rush has improved significantly, thanks to defensive investments, leading to a top-10 pressure rate (39.8%). While Lorenzo Carter only has three pressures, James Pierce Jr. leads with 11, with contributions from Leonard Floyd, Kaden Elliss, Zach Harrison, and rookie Ade Ogundeji. Pressuring Allen is of paramount importance. He thrives under pressure, throwing for 1,018 yards, eight touchdowns, and zero interceptions when not pressured, according to PFF. While his pressured statistics have regressed slightly from last year, he remains one of the best in the league at avoiding pressure and extending plays with his arm and legs. He is sacked less than almost any QB in the NFL and is arguably the best scrambler in the game. The Falcons must maintain lane integrity and not allow Allen to break free and create big plays.

The Falcons may be without slot cornerback Dee Alford Jr., who was limited in Friday and Saturday’s practices. His absence could benefit Bills slot receiver Khalil Shakir, one of Allen’s preferred targets. While Buffalo doesn’t heavily utilize tight end Dalton Kincaid, they spread the ball around effectively.

On the Falcons’ offense, Desmond Ridder needs to improve his consistency. He looked shaky against the Buccaneers, struggled against the Vikings and Panthers. Ridder did have his best game of the season against Washington in Week 4, before the bye. Ridder will again be without wide receiver Darnell Mooney (injured reserve), and will focus the passing attack on Drake London, tight end Kyle Pitts and running back Bijan Robinson.

London has typically been Ridder’s go-to target whenever Mooney is out, but he’s likely to see shadow coverage from Bills cornerback Christian Benford. Benford splits his time equally between left and right cornerback, shadowing opposing team’s best receivers. Buffalo’s other starting corner is Tre’Davious White who hasn’t been the same player since suffering a serious Achilles injury. Any time the Falcons can get London matched up with White instead of Benford, that could be an area to attack.

Buffalo is also missing linebacker Matt Milano and safety Damar Hamlin, who is on injured reserve. Milano has missed two games this year due to injuries. The Falcons need to exploit the absence of both players to maximize their offense. The absence of Milano could give Pitts and Robinson favorable match-ups in the passing game.

In the run game, the Bills are vulnerable. They have allowed significant rushing yardage in two games this year: against the Ravens in Week 1 and against the Saints, who rushed for 189 yards. Robinson ranks sixth in rushing win rate and consistently breaks tackles and gains yards after contact. He is also excellent as a receiver, with 18 receptions for 270 yards and a touchdown in just four games. Atlanta needs Robinson to excel against the Bills, both as a runner and receiver.

Allen presents a major challenge for the Falcons defense, especially with the absence of key defensive players. The Bills are tough to beat when Allen is at his best, whether through the air or on the ground.
