With six Super Bowl victories, the Pittsburgh Steelers are one of the most successful franchises in NFL history. But despite all of their success, there’s one thing that I can never take away, which is their opportunity in week 7: to win on the road against a divisional opponent on Thursday night. The Steelers have played a total of eight Thursday night games on the road in franchise history and have gone 0-8 in those games, including a 0-6 mark under Mike Tomlin. The Steelers had an opportunity to end the streak last year but lost to the Cleveland Browns 24-19 in a game where Pittsburgh was favored by 3.5 points. The Steelers will have an opportunity to end their winless streak when they travel to Cincinnati to battle the Bengals in a Thursday game where Pittsburgh is favored by 5.5 points per Caesars Sportsbook. This streak began in 1980 with a loss to the Houston Oilers and has now spanned 45 years.
Oilers (AFC Central) Oilers 6-0Dec. 4, 1980
Jaguars (AFC Central) Jaguars 20-6 Dec. 2, 1999
Browns (AFC North) Browns 13-6 Dec. 10, 2009
Ravens (AFC North) Ravens 22-20 Nov. 28, 2013
Ravens (AFC North) Ravens 26-6Sept. 11, 2014
Browns (AFC North) Browns 21-7 Nov. 14, 2019
Browns (AFC North) Browns 29-17 Sept. 22, 2022
Browns (AFC North) Browns 24-19 Nov. 21, 2024
It’s 0-8 straight up and 1-7 against the spread. This streak has been so long that the Steelers have played two divisional games against opponents who are no longer in the division (Jaguars and Oilers/Titans). Though divisional games just haven’t happened, and they typically sleep on Thursday nights. Since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970, the Steelers are 3-15 in Thursday road games, which is the worst win percentage of any NFL team in that span. Here are the three worst teams on the road in Thursday games since 1970 (via CBS Sports Research):
1. Steelers: 3-15 (.167)
2. Browns: 2-8 (.200)
3. Jets: 3-11 (.214)
It should come as no surprise to anyone that the Browns and Jets are in the number, but the Steelers are certainly an eyesore in the grouping. Overall, the Steelers are 12-18 in Thursday pilots in franchise history. The numbers don’t get any better if you look at how the games have played out since Tomlin was hired. The Steelers are 2-9 overall in Thursday games, including 0-6 against division opponents. Since the 2019 season began, the Steelers are 1-5 on Thursday night.
If anyone could break this Steelers streak, it’s Aaron Rodgers. The four-time NFL MVP has won 11 games on Thursday night in his career, which is the second-most in league history. The only quarterback with more Thursday wins is Tom Brady, and Rodgers can tie him with the Bengals.
It’s almost fitting that Rodgers could tie Brady because he will also be tying another mark Brady held as he steps on the field in Cincinnati. The matchup between Rodgers and Joe Flacco will mark the second pairing of two quarterbacks over 40 years in 40 years. The only other time in 2020 when Brady and Drew Brees played against each other three times while they were playing against the Buccaneers and Saints. Brady also has the most wins against the Steelers with 12, which is notable that Flacco is behind him. Should the Bengals pull off the upset, not only would Pittsburgh’s nightmare losing streak continue, but Flacco would pass Brady for the most wins against the Steelers.
