Former world champion boxer Ricky Hatton was found hanged at his home, a coroner’s court heard on Thursday. The 46-year-old was found “unresponsive” at his home in Hyde, Greater Manchester on the morning of September 14 by his manager, Paul Speak, the court was told. A 10-minute inquest into the death of the former popular boxer was opened and adjourned until April 20 by Senior Coroner for Manchester South, Alison Mutch. “The provisional cause of death has been deferred,” Mutch said. Police Coroner’s Officer Alison Catlow gave the court some details surrounding the discovery of Hatton’s body.
The court was told Hatton was last seen when he was seen by his family. “Fine.” But when Hatton failed to show to be taken to Manchester Airport for a flight to Dubai on the morning of September 14, his manager arrived at his home. Hatton’s family insisted the former world champion was “in a good place,” a loving father and grandfather who had been planning for the future, including packing bags for a fight in Dubai in December. His death has left his family devastated.
A proud Mancunian and ardent Manchester City supporter, his passing has seen tributes pour in from across the boxing and wider sporting community worldwide. Last week, celebrities including Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher, former England and Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney and his wife Coleen, and boxers Tyson and Tommy Fury attended a memorial at Manchester Cathedral to celebrate Hatton’s life. Loved, humble and hilarious, the ‘Hitman’ was adored by thousands of fans. His all-action fighting style and down-to-earth demeanour made him one of the most popular fighters on both sides of the Atlantic.
