Following the deaths of three local cricketers, Afghanistan withdrew from a T20 International Tri-Series held in Pakistan last month. The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) stated the deaths were a result of military strikes amidst ongoing cross-border tensions between the two countries. Reuters reported a 48-hour ceasefire declared on Friday amidst peace talks between Pakistan and Afghanistan, affecting dozens. Afghanistan was scheduled to play a Tri-Series with Pakistan and Sri Lanka from November 17-29, with two stages of games held between Afghanistan and Pakistan. The ACB said in a statement: “ACB considers this a major loss for the sports community of Afghanistan, its athletes and families.” In honor of the victims, the Afghanistan Cricket Board decided to withdraw from participation in the upcoming Tri-Nation T20 series. Afghanistan’s leader Rashid Khan confirmed the decision, posting on social media platform X, writing that “National pride comes before everything.” The Pakistan Cricket Board has yet to comment on the developments. In the Tri-Series, the two Afghan teams were set to play. Pakistan and Sri Lanka are scheduled to play each other twice, leading up to the final in Lahore on November 29.
