Michael Jordan’s iconic 1986 Fleer rookie card with an “aftermarket” autograph has sold for a record $2.7 million through Goldin Auctions. Jordan has an exclusive partnership with Upper Deck for signed memorabilia, including a Chicago Bulls rookie version of the Fleer product. In 2006, Jordan signed 23 copies of the card for Upper Deck’s 20th Anniversary Buyback Promotion. Jordan began signing copies outside of Upper Deck’s official offerings. According to Goldin Auctions, the $2.7 million sale was for a PSA Mint Grade 9 with a Grade 10 autograph – one of nine Jordan “secretly witnessed” signing for the 2024 event. “This record-breaking sale is a testament not only to Jordan’s enduring legacy, but also to the growing recognition of aftermarket autographed cards,” Ken Goldin, Founder and CEO of Goldin Auctions, said in a statement. Earlier this year, a Jordan-Kobe Bryant dual card fetched $1.9 million. The card featured two NBA logos, images of Bryant and Jordan, and autographs from two of the game’s best players in history. The complete auction for the card, graded PSA 6, concluded in August via Heritage Auctions’ special “Summer Platinum Games Auction,” and the buyer’s identity was not immediately disclosed. “The piece is astronomical, which makes sense as it has everything from photos, to odds, to jerseys autographs from two of the best to ever step on a court,” Chris Ivy, founder of Heritage Sports Auctions, said in a statement. “The Dual Logoman card offered in this auction is the only copy created that features both Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant – it’s the most sought-after copy from the incredible Logoman Upper Deck series and due to Kobe Bryant’s tragic passing in 2020, it always will be the only one.” The pre-auction estimate for the card was $6 million, but multiple bids surpassed that figure early in the listing. According to Roncas, the previous high for a sports card was $12.6 million for a mint condition 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle baseball card in 2022.
