Galopin Des Champs is likely to miss his repeat bid in the John Durkan Memorial at Punchestown next month as he battles a minor setback. The dual Cheltenham Gold Cup winner has finished third in the last two editions of the two-and-a-half-mile Grade One, and trainer Willie Mullins had hoped to follow the tried and tested path this season. However, speaking to Sporting Life on Wednesday afternoon, the British and Irish champion said: “Unfortunately I’ve had very little support with him for a couple of weeks. If I am to get him back for the John Durkan, I’m not sure I can get him there. He just needs to be holding up a little and to get everything right. I’m not going to push him hard to get him to run there and if that’s the way it is this time it won’t hurt him, but I’d like to keep him on schedule. I know he is 10, but I think he is still quite young. It will be something like starting in Leopardstown on Christmas Day if Punchestown is missed or there are options for that in going around and going to Tramore (on New Year’s Day). He seems fine now, but I’m missing a few days with him. If Punchestown happens, it happens.”
