— Cooper Flagg dropped his passing zone and handed it over to Antonio Davis, who fired a 10-footer into the air for the delight of a sellout crowd at American Airlines Center. But as Flagg came into the darkness, he couldn’t complete the task. As the ball missed the rim, it bounced down the baseline.
The following was the NBA debut of No. 1 pick – lots of anticipation, but a small result for Flagg and the Dallas Mavericks. Flagg was scoreless in the first half and finished with 10 points on 4-of-13 as the San Antonio Spurs 125-92 on Wednesday night. The 6-foot-9 Flagg started at point guard, a position he had never played before joining the Mavs, and committed three turnovers without recording an assist.
“Not great,” Flagg said when asked to rate his performance. “Obviously, we didn’t play incredibly well, but we have to move on now, we’ll start looking for our focus on Friday (against the Vienna Wizards).”
Editor’s Picks
The related game was dominated by Spurs Victor Wembanyama, the No. 1 pick in the 2020 draft, and had 2024 points. 3 blocks.
Spurs guard Stephon Castle, last season’s Rookie of the Year, added 22 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists and 2 steals while attacking Flagg as his primary champion.
“He couldn’t throw the ball well, but he seemed like he was going to be much more balanced than me,” Castle said of Flagg. “I mean, I was nervous in the first game there. He made some good reads. He wasn’t too surprised, so I think he’s going to have a big year.”
San Antonio guard Dylan Harper, the No. 2 pick behind Flagg, had a more impressive debut. He scored 15 points on 7-of-14 in 23 minutes off the bench. On the other hand, Flagg could not score until a layup in the opening possession of the second half.
“One game. I mean, he’s still a thug,” said Davis, who had a team-high 22 points on 7-of-22 shooting as he fueled the Mavs’ offense. “You came in and the preseason was obviously good, but when that game (a) spins in a packed stadium, the game is national TV… I’m not sure if he’s a social media guy, but you’ve seen – everything was combined with Cooper Flagg and Wembie and all that to be the No. 1 pick. So you start listening to yourself, and I’m sure he’ll be fine if he isn’t right now.
Flagg did become the fifth Dallas player to record a double-double in his NBA debut, grabbing 10 rebounds in those 32 minutes. The list includes coach, Jason Kidd, who at 18, did not think that his debut was discouraging.
He is too small 6-foot player, but Mavs want to play with a step system Washington and Davis with a step system along with PJ Washington. And ball movement.
“We’re just being a little static,” Flagg said. “It’s time to work on that, emphasize it, flow a little better.”
Flagg took just two shots in the first half. He decided to come in the middle and be more aggressive. He went 4-of-11 from the field in the third quarter, as the Spurs outscored the Mavs 33-21.
“I thought Cooper played within himself,” Kidd said. “He took what the defense gave him. He’s making plays. He’s diving on the floor. He’s not someone who’s going to come out of here and shoot every time he touches it. He’s trying to do the game right, and he did that in the first half. I thought he was comfortable, and towards the third he got there, saw that he had to fight to take some shots on the floor when he was being let down. 29” More or less the worst in the game.
“I’m excited to go,” Flagg said. “Of course it hurts, it’s like the first loss, but I’m just trying to wait for the next one, turn the page and want to be available. We know we’re much better than this, so we just have to stay positive and be prepared and included in the next one.”
