Marquez Valdes-Scantling is reportedly pushing to sign with the Steelers after passing on an opportunity to join them this summer, with NFL media suggesting a reunion with QB Aaron Rodgers as a factor. The 31-year-old receiver worked out for the Steelers on Monday. He was recently released by the 49ers after being placed on injured reserve with a calf injury. Valdes-Scantling chose to sign with the 49ers’ practice squad this summer instead of joining the Steelers because San Francisco thought it would be a better fit than the Steelers’ injury offer. And in five games played, he only caught four passes for 40 yards.
An eight-year veteran, Valdes-Scantling spent his first four NFL seasons in Green Bay with Rodgers. In their third season together, Valdes-Scantling led the league in average yards per catch and helped Rodgers win his third league MVP award. After four years in Green Bay, Valdes-Scantling won two Super Bowls with the Kansas City Chiefs, while quickly developing chemistry with quarterback Patrick Mahomes. His value was especially apparent in the playoffs, as Valdes-Scantling hauled in three touchdown passes during the 2022 and 2023 seasons. He caught a touchdown in Kansas City’s Super Bowl 58 win over the 49ers.
Valdes-Scantling had his first taste of postseason success years earlier in Green Bay. In the 2020 NFC Title Game, he caught five targets for 115 yards in the Packers’ 31-26 loss to eventual champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Valdes-Scantling will join the Steelers after spending the last two seasons with the 49ers, Bills and Saints.
In Pittsburgh, he would be joining an offense that has long sought depth at the receiver position. The Steelers’ receiving corps is led by DK Metcalf and teammate Calvin Austin III. Pittsburgh’s passing game has also included a steady stream of career Kenneth Gainwell, Jalen Warren and Jonnu Smith, Pat Freiermuth and Darnell Washington so far.
With the opportunity to play for a first-place team, it’s safe to say that Rodgers is a big reason Valdes-Scantling is coming to Pittsburgh. “He’s a competitor,” Valdes-Scantling said of Rodgers to CBS Sports in 2023 when asked. “Especially if he goes somewhere where he can prove someone wrong. That’s where he’s going to live and die.”
Valdes-Scantling became the latest former teammate of Rodgers from his Packers days to potentially join him. He briefly played with Packers teammates Allen Lazard, Randall Cobb, and Davante Adams during their very short time with the New York Jets. Speaking of the Packers, the Steelers are starting the process of shaking off a 35-25 loss to Rodgers’ former team last Sunday night. While the defense was the biggest culprit in the loss, Rodgers later admitted that the offense could have been better on third down. The Steelers went a dreadful 1-for-10 on third down, which helped set up three Chris Boswell field goals in the first half of Sunday night’s eventual defeat.
“Okay, just an honest assessment,” Rodgers later said when asked how the Steelers can bounce back from a two-game losing streak. “I think, separate the emotions and be okay with criticism, with any position, with any play, and be honest about what we have to improve on. And then we can’t beat ourselves. “I think in the three losses, there’s been times where we’ve had opportunities and we’ve hurt ourselves with turnovers or negative plays. So we need to cut those out. We’re on the same page offensively and defensively, and we’re maintaining belief.”
