Marchand returned to his hometown of Halifax, Nova Scotia, to fill in for his friend JP MacCallum, whose 10-year-old daughter recently passed away from cancer, according to reports. Marchand missed Tuesday night’s game against the Anaheim Ducks in Halifax and coach McCallum announced March and Mill Co. Hunters’ Wednesday game. Supporters are encouraged to support the MacCallum family and honor Selah Panachuk-MacCallum after her passing. “Please join us for an amazing night at the rink celebrating the lasting character made possible by a 10-year-old girl who loved the game with all her heart,” Marchand wrote. Marchand co-owns March and Mill Co., the parent company that supports the Nova Scotia U18 hockey league team. Marchand is expected to return to the Panthers for Saturday’s game against the Dallas Stars, and coach Paul Maurice said that the expanded stretch between games allowed Marchand the opportunity to help his friend. “The schedule actually worked out well for what the family is going through, for what he’s going through,” Maurice told reporters Wednesday. “… We took the second day off, which we are now. It fits well with what Brad’s doing. He won’t be here tomorrow, for sure. There’s no ice tomorrow. He’ll be back for the game.” Now in his first season with the Panthers, Marchand is off to a fast start with five goals and six assists in 10 games.
