Fantasy Baseball: First mock draft for 2026 sets the market for World Series standouts like Vladimir Guerrero

Yes, the results of our first mock draft for 2026 are just a few scrolls away. No, you’re not going to agree with everything you see there, and I’ll warn you right now that your disagreements will amount to more than mere quibbles. But before you descend into blinding rage, allow me to remind you that these results aren’t so serious. Not yet, anyway. The offseason hasn’t even begun yet, first of all. Fantasy Baseball analysts are still in hibernation mode, with most of their attention either going to football or the two teams in the World Series. “Oh, I forgot about him” was a common refrain in this draft — and for good reason. The draft room is still populated by the 2025 rankings, so those who came without their own rankings in hand were left to fly by the seat of their pants. I’ve spent the past month putting together my initial 2026 rankings, as you’ve hopefully observed, but I imagine not everyone in this draft had that luxury. So take this draft for what it is, a starting point, and not what it’s not, the final word. A group of knowledgeable but ill-prepared Fantasy Baseball enthusiasts came together to feel out the player pool for the first time, and to that end, our curiosity was satisfied. Whatever takeaways come of it should be broad and loose. Which enthusiasts, you ask? Let’s get on with the introductions: 1) Mike Nelson, Fantasy Baseball Now2) Dan Schneier, CBS Sports3) Anthony Kates, SportsEthos (@akfantasybb)4) Sean Snow, former Podcast League participant5) Frank Stampfl, CBS Sports (@Roto_Frank)6) Cole Claybourn, independent journalist7) Sean Martin, Fantasy Baseball Now (@Sean_Martin77)8) Marty Tallman, TGFBI participant9) Jeremy Heist, Fantistics Fantasy (@heistjm)10) Scott White, CBS Sports (@CBSScottWhite)11) Chris Towers, CBS Sports (@CTowersCBS)12) Drew Klein, The Dynasty Guru (@dynastyguru)
The format was standard Rotisserie. Here are my biggest takeaways: Not much strange happened at the start of the draft. Shohei Ohtani over Aaron Judge is a mild upset, perhaps. Elly De La Cruz (sixth) went a few picks too early, in my estimation, while Ronald Acuna (ninth) went a few picks too late. Cal Raleigh, Nick Kurtz, Junior Caminero, and Kyle Schwarber were all new additions to Round 2, as expected, though perhaps in a different order than I would have taken them. First basemen Matt Olson, Bryce Harper, and Rafael Devers all went in quick succession at the end of Round 3, which makes sense because the line between them is razor-thin.Chris Towers did something interesting, taking pitchers Garrett Crochet and Paul Skenes with his first two picks, and I was prepared to pair up Tarik Skubal with Skenes if the latter had lasted one more pick. Those three rise so far above the rest of the starting pitcher crop that I’m genuinely enthusiastic about taking them at the Round 1-2 turn, which is not how I usually approach the top pitchers in drafts. For all the debate over who deserves to be SP4, it was Logan Gilbert in this draft, with another prime contender, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, following close behind. Chris Sale, who’s also in the running for SP4, was the eighth pitcher selected this draft, with Cristopher Sanchez and Blake Snell coming off the board in between. The closer rush was slow to arrive, which seems to be a hallmark of CBS drafts, but I think the uncertainty over relief pitcher roles, with all of the offseason activity yet to come, exacerbated it in the first draft. The first to pull the trigger on a reliever was me, actually, at Pick 87, and I opted for Mason Miller, who typifies the role uncertainty surrounding so many relievers right now. My expectation is that he’ll close for the Padres with Robert Suarez departing via free agency, but it’s possible that Suarez comes back or even that the Padres try Miller as a starter. Other likely closers whose less-than-surefire status caused them to slip include Devin Williams (163), Trevor Megill (175, actually behind teammate Abner Uribe), Raisel Iglesias (177), and Daniel Palencia (196).While Vladimir Guerrero’s postseason success seemed to move him up the draft board (going 13th overall, five spots ahead of Nick Kurtz), the same wasn’t true for Yamamoto (32), Trey Yesavage (184), or Roki Sasaki (205), the latter two of whom actually went too late, I think. It’s my observation that whatever postseason bounce shows up in these early mock drafts tends to be short-lived anyway. If you’re curious to see where some of 2025’s biggest surprises ended up going, let me draw your attention to Brice Turang (my own pick at 39), Geraldo Perdomo (50), Hunter Goodman (my own pick at 63), Maikel Garcia (70), Ben Rice (77), Trevor Story (my own pick at 106), Kyle Stowers (110), Kyle Bradish (119), Nick Pivetta (127), Luke Keaschall (134), Andy Pages (146), Jakob Marsee (155), Trent Grisham (159), Nolan McLean (146) and Cameron Schlittler (169). Not a single one was drafted earlier than I personally rank him, but that’s probably because …Too many players were drafted as if 2025 never happened, which, again, is likely a byproduct of the new rankings not being uploaded yet. Some of the clearest examples include Jarren Duran (43), Jackson Merrill (48), Dylan Cease (54), Michael King (61), Christian Walker (78), Steven Kwan (85), Jackson Holliday (103), Ryan Pepiot (120), Matt McLain (126), Dylan Crews (133) and Bryce Miller (139). Maybe as draft season plays out, I’ll come to find out that the average drafter really is willing to extend these players so much grace, but my sense as of now is that they were simply drafted too early in this one.
