OpenAI announced on Monday that it is working with chipmaker Broadcom to develop its own artificial intelligence computer chips. The two California-based companies did not disclose the financial terms of the agreement, but they said they would begin deploying new racks of customized “artificial intelligence accelerators” by the end of next year. This is the latest deal between OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, and companies that make the chips and data centers needed to run AI. In recent weeks, OpenAI has announced partnerships with chip manufacturers Nvidia and AMD, which will supply AI startups with specialized chips for running AI systems. OpenAI also has major deals with Oracle, CoreWeave, and other companies to develop the data centers that house these chips. Many of the deals are based on round-robin financing, where companies simultaneously invest in and supply the world’s most valuable startup with technology, raising fears of an AI bubble. OpenAI is not yet profitable, but says its products are now used by more than 800 million users per week. “What’s real about this announcement is OpenAI’s commitment to having its own chips,” said Gil Luria, head of technology research at DA Davidson. “The rest is great. At this point, OpenAI has nearly $1 trillion in liabilities and only $15 billion in revenue.” OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said work on developing the custom chip with Broadcom began about 18 months ago. Broadcom also partners with other leading artificial intelligence developers, including tech giants Amazon and Google. Altman said on a podcast that the partnership with Broadcom has made possible 10 gigawatts of computing power, which he described as a massive amount of computing infrastructure “to meet the world’s needs for advanced intelligence.” Broadcom shares rose more than 9% on Monday. Broadcom CEO Hock Tan said on the same podcast that OpenAI needs more computing power as it moves towards “better and better cutting-edge models and superintelligence.” “If you make your own chips, you control your own destiny,” he added.
