A cold snap has triggered widespread frost advisories across the Midwest and Eastern United States, impacting nearly seven million residents from Wisconsin to North Carolina. North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin are among the states under advisory. “Frost and freezing conditions could kill crops, other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing,” the NWS stated. “Frost could harm sensitive outdoor vegetation,” the advisory added. “Sensitive outdoor plants may be killed if left uncovered.” This is due to an early-season cold spell caused by a sprawling high-pressure system in Canada. According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, travel disruptions will be minimal for now, but icy conditions may develop on rural roads after freezing. The sudden cold snap could drop temperatures as low as 25° Fahrenheit. The National Weather Service has issued an advisory for 10 states, covering over 200 counties.

The frost track spans over 200 counties, from the dairy-rich Milwaukee and Dane regions of southeastern Wisconsin to the mountainous areas of Avery and Buncombe counties in western North Carolina. Temperatures in Champaign, Cook (North), DuPage, Kankakee, and Peoria are expected to fall between 27 and 32° Fahrenheit. In Indiana, lows of 28 to 31° Fahrenheit will spread across the northern, central, and southern regions, while northeastern and southeastern Iowa will see temperatures between 25 and 31° Fahrenheit. Kentucky is expected to see minimum temperatures of 29 to 32° Fahrenheit, with Rowan and Powell counties potentially facing frost that could halt late vegetable planting. Southeastern Minnesota is bracing for temperatures as low as 25° Fahrenheit, while Virginia’s Culpeper and Orange counties, a potential threat to local vineyards, are expected to dip to 31° Fahrenheit.

In western North Carolina, temperatures could fall to 27-28° Fahrenheit, while parts of Ohio, including the central, south, and southeast regions, are expected to see temperatures near 31° Fahrenheit. Low temperatures will range from 25 to 31° Fahrenheit, with West Virginia hovering near 31° Fahrenheit. From east-central to southeastern Wisconsin, temperatures are forecast to be between 26 and 34° Fahrenheit. This early-season cold spell is brought on by a sprawling high-pressure system originating in Canada. NWS officials urge residents in affected areas to cover sensitive vegetation, insulate exposed pipes, and monitor local forecast updates. The agency warns that additional cold fronts and storm systems could alter conditions, potentially causing natural disasters. These advisories aim to mitigate agricultural losses and protect vulnerable systems as winter weather begins to settle in parts of the U.S.
