A recent HP OneAgent update inadvertently removed critical certificates, breaking Entra ID logins for some AI PCs. The faulty script, intended to remove HP 1E performance software related files, mistakenly targeted and deleted Microsoft-issued certificates containing “1E,” severing trust with the cloud. HP has withdrawn the update and is assisting affected users; a relatively small number of devices were impacted.

The HP OneAgent software, responsible for system management and updates, released version 1.2.50.9581 which included a script designed to remove files associated with HP’s 1E Performance Assist software. The script searched for and deleted any certificates containing the substring “1E” in the subject, issuer, or friendly name. Unfortunately, this included the “MS-Organization-Access” certificate issued by Microsoft when a device joins Microsoft Entra ID or Intune. Removing this certificate disconnected the device from Entra ID, rendering logins impossible.

Security researcher Rudy Ooms of Patch My PC first noticed the issue, stating “the entire Entra/Azure AD join is gone!” and that devices “silently fell out of the cloud. All trust between Windows and Entra ID is gone.”

However, the number of affected devices appears limited. Ooms estimates the chance of a company receiving a certificate with the problematic “1E” string is less than 10%. Furthermore, the issue only affected HP AI PCs (first released about a year ago), further reducing the potential scope.

In a statement to BleepingComputer, HP confirmed they have removed the problematic update and are working to assist affected users.

“HP is aware of a potential issue impacting some HP AI PCs due to a recent over-the-air update,” HP told the publication. “The update is no longer available and will not impact other AI PCs. We are investigating the issue and working closely with impacted customers to address the impact.”
