A strong earthquake struck Alaska on Thursday, shaking Anchorage, home to approximately 300,000 people. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) recorded a magnitude 5.4 earthquake approximately 29 miles south-southeast of Fox River and about 110 miles south of Anchorage in a remote coastal area at 9:30 am local time (2:30 pm ET). The agency stated that the earthquake was felt in Anchorage. More than 2,000 people in the region reported feeling the tremor. About five minutes later, the USGS detected another earthquake near the epicenter with a magnitude of 2.6. The agency forecasts an 87 percent chance of aftershocks measuring 3 or greater in the coming week, a 47 percent chance of aftershocks measuring 4 or greater, and a 12 percent chance of another earthquake measuring magnitude 5.
