Netflix will explore the origins of the Kennedy family, America’s longest-running political dynasty. The streamer has greenlit a series titled Kennedy, with Michael Fassbender starring as patriarch Joseph Kennedy Sr. The show is produced by Chernin Entertainment and showrunner Sam Shaw (Castle Rock, Manhattan). Thomas Vinterberg (Another Round) is attached to direct. The series is based on Fredrik Logevall’s JFK: Coming of Age in the American Century, 1917-1956. “The Kennedys story is the closest thing American has to a Shakespeare and The Bold and the Beautiful,” Shaw said. “But Fredrik Logevall’s magnificent and definitive biography pierces the veil of myth in a way that allows an understanding of the human endeavor behind the mythology, which is revelatory not only about the Kennedys but also about our present moment, about how we got here and where we are going. I couldn’t be more excited to be telling this story for Netflix, with Peter Chernin and Thomas Vinterberg.” Kennedy is intended to be an ongoing series. The first season is set in the 1930s and, according to the show’s logline, follows “Joe and Rose Kennedy and the improbable rise of their nine children, including rebellious second son, Jack.” Shaw is executive producing with Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping and Caitlin Kary for Chernin Entertainment, Eric Roth, Logevall, Lila Byock, Anya Epstein, Dustin Thomason, Vinterberg and Anna O’Malley. He will executive produce Kennedy with Dahvi Waller. Chernin Entertainment, part of The North Road Company, has produced a variety of titles for Netflix, including animated series Exploding Kittens, the Fear Street films, Back in Action and Slumberland.
