Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival (PÖFF) has revealed the lineup for its 29th Baltic Competition, featuring 11 titles from local filmmakers. Sergei Loznitsa’s The Kiev Trial, which premiered at Cannes, will open the lineup in the non-competition section.

The program includes three world premieres that are very different. Alice Zariņa’s Latvian coming-of-age drama Flesh, Blood, Even A Heart, follows a 30-something woman battling physical anxieties about her flesh, blood and even her mind. “Līve once dreamed of becoming a Barbie, and still hopes that her loving, somewhat old-fashioned husband will be unable to resist her, even if he hardly kisses her,” the synopsis reads. “Everything changes when Līve receives a surprising phone call: her estranged father is in a coma and in intensive care.”

Directed by Ignas Jonynas, Borderline is a contemporary western starring rising star Šarūnas Zenkevičius (The Restoration). The plot synopsis reads, “Vilnius, a sorrowful ornithologist, owes money to the bank, saves birds from poachers’ nets, observes migration and takes care of his mentally challenged daughter Urte.” “When a random accident disrupts his dreary everyday life, Vilius is drawn into the dark world of illegal drug smuggling.”

And in Paavo Westerberg’s Finnish-Estonian co-production Therapy, Finnish film stars discover the secrets of a long marriage in a historic Estonian manor. According to the plot synopsis, “Marriage no longer works for popular author Leena and Pekka, but the couple’s careers as therapists are thriving.”

Other titles in the Baltic Competition include Becoming, Lithuanian writer-director Gabrielė Urbonaitė’s feature debut; The Visitor, the directorial debut from Lithuanian cinematographer Vytautas Katkus; and The Activists, the last film of (author) Kuut’s queer trilogy.

“This year’s selection indicates the growing importance of our region,” said Edvinas Pukšta, Baltic Competition curator. “PÖFF is presenting two Baltic competition sections for the first time (one for fiction and one for documentaries) and showcasing almost 40 feature-length Baltic films throughout the festival, more than ever before. One of our goals is to present award-winning films from this region, such as The Visitor, which has just won at the Riga International Film Festival competition, to our audiences and share their international success.”

The Baltic Competition jury includes Georgian writer Alexandre Koberidze (What Do We See When We Look at the Sky?, Let the Summer Never Come Again), Turkish filmmaker Göze Kural (Cinema is Island), and Mons Triola, producer and co-founder of Undergrund Films and longtime collaborator of Albert Serra.
