IT: Welcome to Derry, much like a mischievous clown dancing in the darkness of your mind, is a strange beast. Technically, the series is a prequel to 2017’s IT and 2019’s IT Chapter Two. The series is an adaptation of Stephen King’s epic 1986 novel about Derry, Maine, a small town terrorized by an ancient, child-eating monster that appears every 27 years. According to co-creator Andy Muschietti, who also directed the films, Welcome to Derry will adapt various aspects of the book, delving deeper into Derry’s violent history and how the entity at its heart influences it. While this is true, the show is also very much its own creature, incorporating military conspiracies, spycraft, and Native American mythology that deviate significantly from King’s story. This gives the creative team plenty of freedom to express their vision of Derry while also paying homage to King’s vast body of work, which includes a penchant for cross-pollination, thanks to Easter eggs. What exactly constitutes an Easter egg is open to interpretation. For the purposes of this article, however, we’re focusing on direct and indirect references to the IT book and King’s work in general. Also, for clarity’s sake, I’ll be referring to the story’s nameless shapeshifter as Pennywise. Pennywise is the squinting clown who often acts as a painted face. Here are the Stephen King Easter eggs from Welcome to Derry. Bookmark this piece because it’ll be updated whenever a new episode comes out. Where can I watch IT: Welcome to Derry?
