In the early evening twilight, when what would become one of baseball’s most remarkable nights still seemed relatively normal, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts made a prediction. “Ultimately,” Roberts said during an in-game interview with Fox television in the fourth inning, when both starting pitchers were struggling through their outings, “it’s going to be a battle of the bullpens tonight.” Freddie Freeman hit a walk-off home run to center field. The 18th inning of the Dodgers’ 6-5 win in World Series Game 3 proved to be vitally important. It was a test of mental fortitude. A challenge to remain calm in the face of sudden death. A battle of physical struggles and mental strength. An instant classic with so many twists and turns. There were sudden changes and frantic bounces, like Bo Bichette’s down-the-line single in the top of the seventh when he hit a sound technician in the elbow on the wall in foul territory, allowing Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to score from first on a throwing error by Teoscar Hernández.

There were big mistakes and even bigger swings, like Shohei Ohtani catching a first-pitch, down-the-middle fastball from Blue Jays reliever Seranthony Domínguez to re-tie the Dodgers in the bottom of the seventh, evening the night. There were game-saving defensive plays, none bigger than when the Dodgers’ defense, which had struggled earlier in the night, cut down a runner at home plate in the top of the 10th after two perfectly executed relays from Hernández and Tommy Edman. The Dodgers got heroic first scoreless performances from youngsters Justin Roblewski, Rocky Sasaki, Emmet Sheehan, and Edgardo Henriquez, who escaped a bases-loaded, no-out jam of future Hall of Famer Clayton Kershaw, and a gutsy four innings from Will Klein in the 12th.
And, finally, nearly seven hours later, it ended with Freeman’s walk-off home run, giving the Dodgers a 2-1 series lead in this World Series and a win that will always be remembered in Chavez Ravine.
