“Tron: Ares” topped the box office this weekend, but Disney’s third entry in the sci-fi series underperformed expectations. Despite some positive reviews – including one out of four stars from the Associated Press – the new “Tron” film starring Jared Leto, Greta Lee, and Jeff Bridges grossed $33.5 million, according to Comscore estimates released Sunday. The big-budget project, which cost around $150 million, opened lower than “Tron: Legacy,” which opened at $44 million before grossing over $400 million worldwide. The final chapter follows the struggle between two tech powerhouses, EMcom and Dillinger, who have faced the same artificial intelligence challenge. Each can use a laser-based 3D printer to create physical creations – but each creation only lasts 29 minutes before crumbling into ash. “Tron: Ares” was full of action and nostalgia, but it wasn’t enough to draw big numbers in over 4,000 theaters. “It has been difficult for this franchise to gain traction and become a mega franchise,” said Comscore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian. He noted that the original 1982 film “Tron” initially struggled at the box office but eventually grew in popularity. Dergarabedian said international numbers could play a major role in a film’s profitability. “It’s still at the top of the box office.” “A firm release date has been chosen. All eyes are on a big Disney film that represents a huge, well-known brand that has been around for decades.” The new release wasn’t the only one struggling to connect. “Roofman,” which stars Channing Tatum and Kristen Dunst in a drama about a construction worker trying to rebuild his life, opened in second place with a modest $8 million debut. Paul Thomas Anderson’s “One War” and “Succession” came in third place with $6.6 million in revenue. “Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie” settled in fourth place with $3.3 million. The Netflix and DreamWorks family release – based on the popular pre-school series – is continuing to do well with young audiences in its third weekend. In fifth place, “Soul on Fire” debuted with $3 million. The faith-based drama tells the true story of burn survivor and motivational speaker John O’Leary and features performances by Joel Courtney, William H. Macy, and John Corbett. The Conjuring: The Latest Rites marked another steady entry for Warner Bros. in seventh place with $2.9 million, while “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba – Infinity Castle” continued the anime series’ strong theatrical momentum worldwide, grossing $2.2 million. “The Smashing Machine,” starring Dwayne Johnson as UFC legend Mark Kerr, added $1.7 million in eighth place. “The Strangers: Chapter 2” movie came in eighth place in the top ten. After two big weekends last month, the box office hit October – a month Dergarabedian calls the bridge month between the summer and holiday movie seasons. He said this month is perfect for films like “The Smashing Machine” and “Hunt After the Hunt,” which will be released on October 17 to shine in their own way. “If you’re a fan of film, especially indie, art house, awards season, it’s a great month,” he said. “Filmmakers should embrace the eclectic offerings available on the big screen.” “One after another war,” $6.6 million. “Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie,” $3.3 million. – “Soul on Fire” $3 million. “The Conjuring: The Last Rights,” $2.9 million. – “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba – Infinity Castle” with $2.2 million. “Broken Machine,” $1.7 million. – “Strangers: Chapter 2” with $1.5 million. “Good Boy” $1.3 million. – Jonathan Landrum Jr., AP Entertainment Writer (Tag for translation) Box Office (T) Movie (T) Science Fiction
