Waymo said Wednesday that it will begin testing its self-driving vehicles on London streets in the coming weeks – with a human “safety driver” behind the wheel – as it seeks government approval for its service. In a blog post, Waymo said it will be “building the groundwork” for its service in London in the coming months. The company stated that it will “continue working with local and national leaders to secure the necessary permissions for our commercial passenger service.” Waymo’s self-driving taxis have been operating in the United States for years, currently serving the cities of Phoenix, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Atlanta and Austin. This year, the company took its first steps to expand internationally by teaming up with local partners in Japan for testing, although a launch date for a commercial service there has not been set. The company started as a secret project within Google and then spun out from the tech giant. Waymo will have to adhere to new British regulations on self-driving cars that pave the way for autonomous vehicles to hit the country’s roads. It requires a safety level for self-driving cars that is “at least as high as a careful and competent human driver” and to meet stringent safety checks. The company will also be able to participate in a pilot program for “micro” self-driving taxi and bus services that the government is planning for the spring of 2026. Waymo will also have to abide by rules of Transport for London, the city’s transportation authority that oversees licensing for popular traditional black cabs as well as other taxi operators, such as Uber.
