Barger wasn’t in the starting lineup for Game 1 of the World Series, the Blue Jays’ first since 1993. He probably wouldn’t say it publicly, but it may have been a blessing in disguise. According to TOI, he actually spent the night before bunking with teammate Davis Schneider inside a hotel at Rogers Centre and sleeping on a pull-out sofa. Schneider joked to reporters after the win that the pull-out “was squeaking all night” and that Barger was banned from sleeping in their bed with Schneider and his girlfriend. “It’s a hoot, but it’s funny,” Schneider said. “They set me up with a place, but I’m not going to pay for a hotel room for a couple of days,” Barger told ESPN. “I know it sounds crazy, but I’m just trying to save money.” Despite the seemingly uncomfortable slumber, he slugged a grand slam, the first in World Series history, in the sixth inning to help the Jays to an 11-4 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Blue Jays took Game 1 over the Dodgers after Shohei Ohtani hit his first career Fall Classic homer. The morning after the Jays beat the Seattle Mariners in the American League Championship Series, Barger flew home to see his wife, who had just given birth to the couple’s third child. He flew back to Toronto, but Barger didn’t have a full-time place in the city and needed a place to stay. So he roomed with Miles Straw before sharing a room with Schneider. It was the biggest home run by the Blue Jays since Monday night, when George Springer’s three-run homer sent the Blue Jays to the World Series.
