A person accused in an INR 8 lakh bribery corruption case was arrested along with another individual on October 16, 2025. A CBI court on Friday (October 31, 2025) extended the judicial custody of suspended Punjab Police Deputy Inspector General Harcharan Singh Bhullar, who has been arrested in a bribery case, an official said. “Regarding the extension of judicial custody for fourteen days, the CBI and the court have extended it until November 14,” said Mr. Bhullar’s lawyer. The accused was arrested on October 16 along with another person in a case of corruption involving a bribe of INR 8 lakh. Following a complaint filed by a scrap dealer of Mandi Gobindgarh in Fatehgarh Sahib, Bhullar was apprehended from his office in Mohali for allegedly demanding recurring monthly payments in exchange for “settling” a 2023 FIR against him. According to the FIR filed by the CBI, the complainant alleged that DIG Bhullar, through his intermediary, demanded undue gratification to settle the 2023 FIR. It was registered against him in Sirhind and to ensure that the police do not take any further coercive or adverse action against his scrap company. He further alleged that Mr. Bhullar was demanding ‘Sewa-Pani’ (recurring monthly payments) and threatening to falsely implicate him in job-related criminal cases in case of non-compliance. A CBI court on October 17 sent Mr. Bhullar to judicial custody for 14 days, which was extended on Friday. The investigating agency seized over INR 7.36 crore in cash, jewellery worth INR 2.32 crore, 26 expensive brand watches, and documents of immovable properties in the name of family members from the DIG’s residence in Chandigarh. The accused has been booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Act, 2023 and the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. Bhullar was appointed DIG (Ropar Range) in November 2024. The Ropar Range includes Mohali, Rupnagar, and Fatehgarh Sahib districts. The state government dismissed him from service after his arrest.
