A weight loss drug user has revealed an unpleasant side effect of the drug impacting her mental and physical health. The woman, posting on Reddit, said she is taking Ozempic but didn’t say how long she’s been using the drug or how much weight she’s lost. She wrote: “Since Friday, after drinking my normal protein shake with banana and chia seeds, I’ve been dealing with non-stop sulfur burps. Now it’s Monday night, and it’s still going on.” She added: “I had brief episodes like this before Ozempic, but with diarrhea, which would usually last a couple of days and then go away. But this time it’s dragging on, and honestly messing with my mood. I’m afraid it might be something more serious.” Sulfur burps are strong, unpleasant-smelling burps, like rotten eggs, which can be caused by gas production in the digestive system. The FDA lists belching or burping as a possible side effect of Ozempic, but says they are rare, occurring in just 1 percent of patients. On the other hand, clinics have anecdotally reported that one in five patients taking GLP-1 drugs, which also include Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Zepbound, experience them while taking the drug. Amy Schumer, 44, is shown above in an Instagram photo posted this week. She said life wasn’t “livable” while taking Ozempic. Your browser does not support iframes. It is one of many side effects linked to the drug, with nausea, vomiting, and indigestion being the most common and experienced in one in five patients. Experts say the burps are caused by the drug because it slows the passage of food through the digestive tract, causing it to linger in the stomach longer and release foul-smelling gases. For those taking Ozempic, reports warn that eating high-fat foods can increase the risk of burping because these foods will take longer to leave the stomach. Dr. Karen Berger, a community pharmacist, told Very Well Health that sulfur burps are generally harmless and are not a sign of an underlying condition. However, she cautioned that if other symptoms, such as stomach pain or diarrhea, are frequent or accompany them, it may be a sign of something more serious, and patients should consult their doctor. About one in eight Americans has now tried a GLP-1, and roughly 5 million adults in the U.S. were taking the medications as of May 2025, according to a report from nonprofit FAIR Health. The post on the r/Ozempic subreddit by user BBW_1409 continues: “The strange thing is, immediately after eating, the burps seem to disappear, or at least mask themselves, but then they inevitably come back in full force afterwards.” Other users chimed in with their own experiences after struggling with the weight-loss drug Ozempic, but added that since I stopped eating stuff with toast, I thought it added a creamer chicken, and they said again that they were back. It was quite traumatic.’ One second said: ‘He was my enemy, learning that it only happens if I (a) don’t get a good amount of protein … and when I skip some food’ ‘The third person said: ‘In most cases, (burps are) just a reaction to (a) excessive amount of fat in the food. Reduce the amount of fat to a minimum for a week and it will probably disappear” Others have said that they have only reduced the burping after cutting back on red meat, onions, garlic, carbonated beverages, and anything fried. GLP-1 injections can also have more serious side effects, including suicidal ideation and life-threatening bowel obstructions. Amy Schumer is among celebrities to reveal her weight loss after using Ozempic and then Mounjaro, but said she had to stop because of the side effects. The 44-year-old took Ozempic in 2023, but said during an appearance on ‘The Howard Stern Show’ in January that she had to quickly get off the drug. She told Stern: ‘So I tried Ozempic, like, three years ago and I was one of those people that was so sick. I was so nauseous. And then you have no energy.’ Weight loss drugs have taken the US by storm, with around one in eight Americans now having tried them. I tried it and I was throwing up and I was so bedridden and my son was like, “Are you gonna play tag?” I was like, “I can’t.” I was so wanting to. “In a separate interview on the 2023 Watch What Happens Live show, she said that life for her while on Ozempic wasn’t “livable.” Said: ‘I tried Ozempic a couple years ago; [my doctor] tried it on me, and the first week or more, I was like, ‘This is amazing. I just don’t want to eat, I don’t want any kind of alcohol. It’s going to be amazing.” “Then I started feeling sick, and I was feeling sicker and sicker. I was literally throwing up four, five times a day, and I was like, ‘I can’t do this.’ So that’s it.” (TagSToTranslate) DailyMail (t) health (t) Ozempic (t) Reddit (t) FDA
