Millions of Microsoft users have been sent an urgent warning ahead of a major software change. From tomorrow, Microsoft will officially end support for the Windows 10 operating system. This means the software will no longer receive automatic technical and security updates. Approximately 21 million people still use Windows 10 in the UK, potentially putting millions of devices at risk of being compromised by hackers.

Microsoft offers the ability to update compatible devices to the latest Windows 11 software for free. However, many older devices may not be compatible with this operating system. Users also have the option to sign up to receive Extended Security Updates for the next 12 months. After this period, however, customers, including those with older computers, will either need to buy a new computer or face the risk of hacking.

Microsoft will end support for Windows 10 from tomorrow, leaving an estimated 21 million UK users without security support. Windows is the world’s most popular operating system, used by approximately 1.4 billion devices globally. Of these devices, around 43 percent were still running Windows 10 as of July 2025, according to Statcounter.

Windows 10 was released in 2015 and has been periodically updated with bug fixes and security fixes since then. These security updates are particularly important because they fix known vulnerabilities in the Windows system. If your computer is not updated to the latest version, cyber criminals can use these known exploits to easily gain access to your personal data. When Windows 10 support ends, these security flaws will no longer be fixed, and any computer still running this software will become vulnerable.

What survey was conducted by Which? In September, it was revealed that around a quarter of the 21 million people still using Windows 10 had no plans to upgrade to Windows 11. With so many devices still running Windows 10, there is a serious risk that many people could suddenly be hacked. After tomorrow, security flaws and vulnerabilities in Windows 10 will not be fixed. This means that anyone still using the old software will be more vulnerable to cyber attacks and malware.

How to upgrade to Windows 11. If your PC is compatible, Windows 11 is currently free to download. On Windows 10, open Settings, go to Update & Security and click Windows Update. Select the Check for Updates button. If Windows 11 is ready, you can simply click “Download and Install” to update the software to the latest version.

Lisa Barber, Which? Tech Editor, said: “If you have a home laptop or computer running Windows, now is the time to check which version you are running, and if it’s Windows 10 or older, make a plan of action.”

If you don’t, you could become more vulnerable to hackers and scammers. If your device is not compatible with Windows 11, you will have the option to continue to receive limited security updates by subscribing to Extended Security Updates. This option will provide one year of continued security patches, but no software or other technical support. However, enrollment in this program is not automatic, and you must enroll in the Update and Security section of your device settings. The service is available free if you agree to sync your PC’s settings with Windows Backup, or as a one-off purchase of £24.99 or 1000 Microsoft Reward Points.

For commercial organizations, the Extended Security Update service will cost $58 per device. Users can sign up any time before the 12-month period ends on October 13, 2026.

If you are unable to upgrade to Windows 11, Microsoft offers one year of limited security patches via the Extended Security Update service. However, it is a consensus service and you need to register to get the security. After this period, however, any device still running Windows 10 will no longer receive security updates. Facing this, many customers may need to buy a new computer that can run Windows 11.

Which? surveys show that nearly one in seven people would look to buy a new laptop to install the latest software. Fiona Dear, Co-Director of the Restart Project, an e-waste charity, said: “Many computers work perfectly well, except that Microsoft wants their owners to buy a new one.”

The Restart Project estimates that around 400 million computers globally will lose software support tomorrow, all of which will eventually need to be replaced. As a result, the charity predicts that these discarded computers could produce 700 million kg of e-waste.

Mrs. Dear said: “Microsoft could stem this mountain of e-waste in the UK and around the world simply by reinstating automatic Windows 10 updates.”
