Duracell plans to roll out its first charging stations in the UK. The initial stations are slated to open this year, with hundreds more planned by 2030. Styled after the brand’s iconic battery (protected by a certain rabbit), the EV charging infrastructure will be funded by EV Network and installed by Electra Charge in the UK. There’s no word on a global rollout at this time. According to a Times article, six sites will go live with plans to open 100 more by 2030, featuring at least 500 charging points. If successful, several more sites may roll out across Europe and beyond.

Mark Blagbrough, Development Director at EVN, believes the “lack of familiarity with charging” can be a stumbling block for some when adopting electric mobility. Blagbrough believes that bringing a household name to the market could offer consumers “instant familiarity and trust,” he told The Times.

The chargers will be capable of simultaneously charging two cars, delivering speeds of around 400kW, making them among the fastest chargers currently available in Europe. The network provider also states that the charging sites will feature clear and transparent pricing, as well as app, contactless or plug-and-go payment options, where supported by the EV in question. EV Network’s Chief Development Officer, Mark Blagbrough, is right to point out that familiarity is key to encouraging EV adoption – the technology still feels very new, and often confusing, to those on the fence. We’ve had over a century to get used to gas pumps, but the thought of plugging into often-confusing and comparatively complex electric vehicle outlets is enough to put potential customers off for good. Perhaps if it resembles something they instantly recognize, it won’t seem so alien.

The Duracell brand is a household name and synonymous with making electric gadgets last longer – everyone in the UK has seen the ad with the hyperactive rabbit.

While the Duracell E-charge network’s UK rollout won’t necessarily offer anything new or innovative, it will provide impressively fast charging speeds and brand recognition that could convince fence-sitters that the network is robust enough to rely on. At the very least, it provides the perfect opportunity to capture social media content of your EV being powered by a giant Duracell battery.
