The second meeting was tense, with two sources telling Reuters that Trump used obscenities several times and pressured Ukrainian President Zelenskyy to cede some territory. He also reportedly wasn’t committed to supplying long-range Tomahawk missiles that could strike deep into Russia and was considering security guarantees for both Kyiv and Moscow, the sources said, requesting anonymity to discuss a private conversation. Trump, who is planning to meet with Putin in Budapest in the coming weeks, reiterated his position that Ukraine should cede territory to “stop the conflict in its tracks” as he flew from Florida to Washington on Sunday evening (Monday AEDT). “If you’re going to say ‘you take that, we’ll take that’, it’s very hard to negotiate the rest,” he said. “You know, there are a lot of different shifts here.” These comments marked another shift in the US leader’s attitude to the war. In recent weeks, Trump has shown growing impatience with Putin and expressed greater openness to helping Ukraine win the war. During this meeting, according to the Washington Post, the Russian leader proposed a land swap in which Ukraine would cede the Donetsk and Luhansk regions in exchange for small parts of Zaporizhzhia and Kherson. One source said US officials suggested precisely this swap to Zelenskyy in their meeting the next day. A person briefed on the meeting said the Ukrainians saw great strategic value in the Donetsk and Luhansk areas, believing that ceding the region would make the rest of Ukraine more vulnerable to Russian attack. This source argued that relinquishing Western Donetsk and Luhansk would be considered “suicide.”
