Former PlayStation Indies head Shuhei Yoshida believes Sony may not be able to continue “increasing graphical power” in its consoles. Yoshida suggests graphics have reached a point where it’s nearly impossible to differentiate between certain features. He stated that the PS5 is an “amazing system” and believes the introduction of the SSD was “almost a miracle.”

Yoshida explained in the Skill Up Friends Per Second podcast that people might not discern the difference between game frame rates or ray tracing use, saying that graphics have reached a terminal phase. “Graphics are almost at a stage where even I cannot tell the difference between some [graphics capabilities] like ray-traced or non-ray-traced rays, unless they are side-by-side or at higher frame rates,” Yoshida said (via GamesRadar).

He continued, saying that PlayStation will definitely be “doing the same thing… providing graphics power and a higher-quality experience.” When asked what Sony could do differently in the future, Yoshida didn’t have an answer but praised the PS5’s capabilities. “For me, I think PS5 is an amazing system from the console experience standpoint,” Yoshida said. “I think PS5 and SSD have made almost every game better,” he added.

Sony is currently collaborating with AMD on Project Amethyst, a new partnership that aims to advance machine learning technologies across devices and expand graphics capabilities. This month, Mark Cerny, lead architect for the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro, shared new technical developments for the project and, in the process, teased the PlayStation 6.

“Overall, of course, it’s still very early days for these technologies, they exist only in simulation at the moment. But the results are very encouraging, and I’m quite excited to bring them to future consoles in a few years,” Cerny said.

Sony has yet to officially announce its next-generation console, but according to recent leaks, the PS6 is expected to launch in late 2027 or early 2028.
