The Big 12 has been one of the wildest conferences in college football for years, and the title race is up in the air again. Preseason favorite Texas Tech suffered a surprising loss to Arizona State, opening the door for many others. Last year in November, nine Big 12 teams were technically alive for the Big 12 title due to parity. Four teams ended up tied for first place at the end of the year, with Arizona State edging out Iowa State for a Big 12 title game appearance and college attendance. Notably, the conference has produced a brand new participant in the Big 12 Championship Game in seven of the last eight years. Four of the five teams are tied with one or fewer losses were a part of conference play season. The Great 12 turns the wheel of chaos. Here’s how each school in the Big 12 title race stacks up, from top contenders to the bottom of the barrel. Top contenders:
Texas Tech (6-1, 3-1): Even after last week’s loss to Arizona State, Texas Tech remains the team to beat in the Big 12. The Texas Tech team is former David Baisey and David Bateman. Rodeason both earn Mids. All-America honors. With quarterback Behren Morton healthy, they are still the best team in the Big 12, but they need him healthy.
BYU (7-0, 4-0): The Cougars have played one of the easiest schedules in the Big 12, but last weekend’s win against Utah landed them in the top bracket. Matchup with Texas Tech on Nov. 8 and trips to Iowa State and Cincinnati exist, but even 1-2 in those games should be enough for Arlington.
Arizona State (5-2, 3-1): The Sun Devils’ 2025 season is shaping up eerily similar to their 2024 campaign, with the big loss being without quarterback Sam Leavitt in the lineup. However, Leavitt’s 319-yard return against Texas Tech helped propel them forward in the contender stack with only one loss. The schedule here is tricky, but not impossible, and the tiebreaker against Texas Tech is huge. Though Texas Tech remains a prohibitive betting favorite at FanDuel, the Sun Devils now have the second-best odds to win the Big 12.
Just needs a break:
Cincinnati (6-1, 4-0): The Bearcats are the surprising team in the 12 season, and arguably belong in the top group. Cincinnati nearly came back from an undefeated start against Nebraska. The trenches are led by the stars of the show, All-American Dontay Corleone and FCS transfer Joe Cotton. Games against Baylor and Utah over the next two weeks could cement contender status.
Utes (5-2, 2-2): The Utes are a high-quality team, probably the third best in the Big 12. The problem? The Utes have tiebreaker losses to both Texas Tech and BYU through their first seven games, with the remaining matchup against No. 21 Cincinnati. Math is not on their side for the tiebreakers.
Houston (6-1, 3-1): Willie Fritz wins everywhere he goes, but this time he will rebuild himself in Houston. The Cougars have already made their first bowl trip to join the Big 12, and there are plenty of potential wins left on the schedule. That said, Houston was a little bit of an offensive streak, but there is another level there.
Iowa State (5-2, 2-2): After a fantastic start, the Cyclones have road scratched into head-to-head losses against Cincinnati and Colorado in recent weeks. They now play No. 11 BYU, No. 24 Arizona State, and at TCU in their next three games. A frustrating way to whiff on what could be a historic season.
Looking for TCU (5-2, 2-2): In recent weeks, the Horned Frogs’ inconsistencies have reared their heads, including a 13-point loss on the road to Kansas State. There are many holes in the upcoming schedule, including No. 11 BYU, Iowa State, and No. 21 Cincinnati. Perhaps the Frogs will still control their destiny, but the road is rough.
Baylor (4-3, 2-2): Baylor has fallen behind high expectations to start the year, and they need a shot at success against SMU and Kansas State to keep things going. A struggling defensive line places them among the worst defensive units in college football, but the offense is at least piling up the points weekly.
Kansas State (3-4, 2-2): Knocking served UCF’s game-winning streak, and the Beasts turned everything around in the last three games. But early-season struggles still plague Kansas State, and a blocked 57-yard field goal against Baylor prevents it from breaking away from the actual path of contention.
Kansas (4-3, 2-2): QB Jalon Daniels has all the promise, but the defense is costing the Jayhawks games. There are many 50-50 games ahead, but none bigger than this week’s Sunflower Showdown against Kansas State.
Arizona (4-3, 1-3): Aside from the game against Oklahoma State, the Wildcats have a big 12 wild card. Even still, they defeated Kansas State in non-conference and played BYU and Houston within six points. The Beasts are a much better football team in 2025 under Brennan, and renewed Noah Fifita was a welcome change.
Colorado (3-4, 1-3): The Buffaloes were inconsistent, but they were a well-rounded team and gave it a chance in every game. Colorado upset Iowa State and took BYU down the wire. The schedule is brutal, but a bowl game may be visible.
UCF (4-3, 1-3): The Knights have shown some promising signs under first-year coach Scott Frost. The headliner was the 45-13 fall of lower West Virginia, but recent games against Cincinnati and Kansas show that the program has clearly taken a step back. If they win against Oklahoma State, they only need to upset Baylor or Houston to return to the regular season.
Last for West Virginia (2-5, 0-4): Rich Rodriguez took his revenge in 3 weeks against Pittsburgh, and the wheels flew completely off of him. In last week’s 45-13 loss to UCF, the Montanans have been outscored by 111 points in four Big 12 games. If the Mountaineers finish winless, it would be WVU’s first such conference campaign since 1960.
Oklahoma State (1-6, 0-4): The Cowboys are bad, but the vibes have increased significantly under interim coach Doug Meacham. According to SP+, the Cowboys are behind FCS Monmouth and just ahead of Division II Ferris State in the standings. Neat!
