The Los Angeles Dodgers’ reliever Alex Vesia’s availability for the upcoming World Series is uncertain due to what appears to be a deeply personal family matter for the Vesia family.
The club released the following statement on Thursday: “It is with a heavy heart that we share that Alex Vesia is away from the team as he and his wife Kayla navigate a deeply personal family matter. The entire Dodgers organization sends our thoughts to the Vesia family, and we will provide an update at a later date.”
Given the apparent gravity of the situation, Vesia’s availability for the series is a secondary concern. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters Thursday that “today is a day without an expectation” as far as Vesia’s World Series status is concerned.
This year, the 29-year-old left-hander made 68 appearances for the Dodgers in the regular season, posting a 3.02 ERA with 80 strikeouts and 19 walks in 59 ⅔ innings. In the team’s current playoff run, Vesia has a 3.86 ERA in 4 ⅔ innings. He has only allowed a run in one of his seven appearances in that span.
Vesia has been a fixture in the Dodgers bullpen since being acquired from the Miami Marlins via trade in February 2021.
World Series Game 1 is scheduled for Friday at 8 p.m. ET in Toronto.
