You can now listen to Fox News articles! House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-NY, has remained silent on the New York City mayoral race despite a self-imposed deadline for an endorsement before early voting begins Saturday morning. The top House Democrat was asked several times during a press conference at the U.S. Capitol on Friday about Democratic Socialist candidate Zohran Mamdani and whether he would endorse him. Jeffries repeatedly said that he would speak about the race before early voting in New York City begins – which happened Saturday at 9 a.m. ET. I have declined to express my position, and I will do so momentarily, in advance of the early voting in the mayoral race,” Jeffries said. A third journalist inquired if Jeffries believes that his refusal to endorse is “dividing the Democratic Party.” “I have traveled around the country, and the Democratic Party has never been as unified as you’ve seen us this year, and you’re going to feel it in real time. So it won’t be speculative. You’re going to see it in real time in Virginia, in New Jersey, in California in terms of the 50 state support,” Jeffries said, without mentioning his home York Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani (right), Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa (left), and independent candidate and former Governor of New York Andrew Cuomo participate in the second New York City mayoral debate at the LaGuardia Center for Performing Arts at LaGuardia Community College in Long Island City, Queens, New York. Cuomo, who is running as an Independent. While he has earned endorsements from progressives in Congress, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., the two top Capitol Hill Democrats – Jeffries and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. – have remained quiet. Politico reported Friday afternoon that Jeffries is expected to endorse Mamdani later Friday. Elizabeth Elkind is a politics reporter for Fox News Digital leading coverage of the House.
