Virginia Attorney General candidate Jay Jones faced a fresh political blow Friday after a report revealed that his wife donated to the Minnesota Freedom Fund, a controversial bail organization that has used millions to bail out violent crime offenders, including accused rapists and murderers. The report cited a 2020 Facebook post from Mavis Jones promoting the “Minnesota Freedom Fund,” linking to the group’s donation page and asking others to do the same. The account has since been made private. The revelation, first reported by the Washington Free Beacon, comes as Jones, a Democrat, trails Republican incumbent Jason Miyares in a tight race for Virginia’s top law enforcement job, which oversees the state’s attorneys general and state police officers. The Minnesota Freedom Fund, promoted at the time by several progressive figures including then-Sen. Kamala Harris, raised over $41 million during the 2020 riots and pledged to support protesters arrested during clashes with police. But a FOX 9 investigation later found that the group spent much of its money bailing out individuals accused of serious violent crimes rather than low-level protest offenses. (Trevor Metcalf/The Virginian-Pilot/Getty Images via Tribune News Service) Among those bailed out was Christopher Boswell, a two-time convicted rapist facing new kidnapping and assault charges, who was released after the fund paid his $350,000 cash bail. The group also provided $100,000 for the release of Darnika Floyd, who was charged with second-degree murder, and $75,000 for Jalil Stalling, who allegedly shot at a Minneapolis SWAT team before being acquitted at trial. “The last time we were there, he said,” interim executive director Greg Lewin of the fund told FOX 9 the same year. “We hate it when you bail out these sex offenders.” “I often don’t even look at the charge when I bail someone out.” In one instance, the fund posted bail for George Howard, a career criminal who was later charged with fatally shooting a man in a road rage incident in Minneapolis weeks after his release. The news adds to a string of controversies for Jones, 35, who has already apologized for violent text messages directed at Republican leaders. In one message, he wrote that then-House Speaker Todd Gilbert should be “shot twice” in the head” and Gilbert’s wife, Jennifer, should “watch her children die.” Virginia Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jay Jones’s (D-Va.) wife, Mavis Jones, reportedly posted her support for the Minnesota Freedom Fund in 2020, which also bailed out accused court offenders. Jones was convicted in 2022 of reckless driving for traveling 116 mph on a Virginia highway. He was fined $1,500 and ordered to perform 1,000 hours of community service, but a state ethics review is considering whether time he spent volunteering for his political committee should count toward his sentence. An Oct. 17 Trafalgar Group poll showed Miyares leading Jones 49.5% to 44.6%, a reversal from prior polls that had Jones leading by six points before the texting scandal broke.
