একজন বই বিক্রেতাকে জিজ্ঞাসা করুন: মার্টিন কাহিলের “ফক্সের জন্য অডিশন”

The Thread’s “Ask a Bookseller” series connects with independent booksellers nationwide to discover the books they’re most excited about. This week, Liz Barnoski from Poor Richard’s Books in Frankfort, Kentucky recommends a fantasy novella set in a world of animal characters, whose actions offer hope to its human readers. The book is “Audition for the Fox” by Martin Cahill.

Published by Tachyon Publications, “Audition for the Fox” is the first novella from science fiction/fantasy short story writer Martin Cahill. The story resonated with Barnoski because of its focus on the power of individual acts of kindness.

The premise: Nessi, a young woman of sacred blood, chooses to audition for the Fox of Tricks. He wasn’t her first choice as a divine patron, but she has no alternative. Though she anticipated challenges involving clever games, and perhaps even a staring contest, Nessi finds herself in an audition that seems remarkably high-stakes. She’s sent 300 years into the past, to a land cruelly ruled by wolves. Her task? “To inspire a revolution that will impress the Fox.”

Barnoski praises the book’s “delightful” writing and compelling characters. “The wolves are cruel and brutal. The fox is very clever. Nessi fights the revolution not with violence, but with acts of generosity. And I really liked that idea, (the idea) that things can change when someone is kind to someone else.”
