According to Italian authorities, a Japanese tourist tragically died in a horrific accident at the ancient Roman Pantheon on Friday while on a European vacation with his daughter. Morimasa Hibino, 69, was reportedly resting on a railing next to the 2,000-year-old landmark when police believe he lost his balance and fell approximately 7 meters to his death, the Italian newspaper La Repubblica reported. Rome police told CNN that they have launched an investigation into the deadly accident, but authorities do not believe there was any foul play involved. Police said Hibino became dizzy and fell to his death. Originally built between 25 and 27 BC, the Pantheon was rebuilt and completed in 125 CE and still functions as a Catholic church, although it was closed at the time of the incident, CNN reported. Roman police regularly patrol the city’s ancient landmarks to protect against potential falls; the modern Italian city is significantly elevated, roughly 23 meters higher, than its origins, creating a potential hazard. In March, a 55-year-old Spanish woman died after falling from a wall on the Spanish Steps.
