Getty Images Carson Wentz has been placed on injured reserve and, according to CBS Sports NFL Insider Jonathan Jones, is undergoing season-ending shoulder surgery. Wentz made five starts for the Vikings this season before being sidelined. Backup J.J. McCarthy, who is expected to return to the lineup for this week’s game against the Detroit Lions. Alongside McCarthy, the Vikings’ quarterback room includes Max Brosmer, an undrafted rookie currently slotted at No. 2, he will take his spot in the depth charts. Brosmer, who started last season for the Minnesota Gophers, has made three appearances in relief this season, going 5 for eight yards. Wentz, with severe pain in his left, not throwing shoulder for more than half of his five starts, played second string for the Vikings. The former Pro Bowl quarterback was clearly in pain in Minnesota’s most recent game, a 37-10 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers which saw Wentz exit before the end. A 10-year veteran, Wentz made two of his first three starts for the Vikings while filling in for McCarthy, who suffered a high-ankle sprain in Minnesota’s Week 2 against the Falcons. Jim Harbaugh tied an NFL record that stood for 52 years. With Chargers win versus Vikings on Thursday night, John Breech Wentz injured his shoulder during the first half of the Vikings Week 5 win against the Browns in London. Despite the injury, Wentz remained in the game and ultimately capped off a drive that saw him go 9-for-9 passing when he threw a game-winning touchdown pass to Jordan Addison with 25 seconds remaining. After the Vikings used Week 6 to allow him to recover from the injury, Wentz tried but failed to lead the Vikings to wins in subsequent games against the Eagles (his former team) and Shields. He pleaded with Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell to stay in last week’s Shields match despite being sacked five times and clearly being in pain. Wentz tried his best, it will now be up to McCarthy to help turn around the Vikings season. Minnesota is now 3-4 and in last place in the NFC North.
