DALLAS — Mavericks rookie Flagg’s flashing potential had a flashing night flashing flashing flashing before he exited the 101-94 loss to Oklahoma City and spent the majority of the fourth quarter watching from the bench due to a coach’s decision. Flagg, the No. 1 pick who scored 22 points the previous night in a win over Toronto, had just two points on 1-of-9 shooting, two rebounds and no assists in 31 minutes in his second NBA game, lacking the brilliance to perform to his capability when being “flat”. He tweaked his shoulder during the game when he was on the floor. He received treatment and was taped up postgame, and he said he will be fine to go in Wednesday’s home game against the Indiana Pacers. “We’re probably going to go get some scans or whatever, just make sure everything’s clear, but I feel like it’s just a stinger,” Flagg said, adding that he thought he hurt his shoulder while boxing out. “Just whatever you want to do to take care of it, ice it, get some stuff to put it back together and it’ll be good to go.”

Flagg sat for almost the entire stretch, punting with 8:14 remaining and subbing for only a few defensive possessions late. Mavs coach Jason Kidd credited Flagg for showing he was a “tough kid” playing through the pain but said the decision to sit the 18-year-old down the stretch was about giving the Mavs the best chance to win. “He didn’t have his night,” Kidd said. “You have a team, and so we understand that the team put us in a position to win the game. He wasn’t on the floor, but he was aware of his teammates.”
Flagg acknowledged that being on the bench in the fourth quarter was a time he has never experienced, but he said he had no problem with Kidd’s opinion. “The way the game was going, we saw the team, and he was just out there when he was doing well.” He said. “And I mean, I was prone. I was not. I was not influencing the game at a high level, I was not doing the right things. It is clear that it is an easy plan for petoraitis. There he was trying to win the match
