Walt Disney Co. Wednesday said it finalized its deal to acquire a majority stake in FuboTV and increasingly integrate its Hulu+ Live TV business with its sports-centric operations. The consortium, with about 6 million domestic subscribers, forms the country’s sixth-largest pay-TV service. Financial terms were not disclosed. Like competitors DirecTV, YouTube TV, and Charter Spectrum, both Hulu + Live TV and Fubo offer traditional channels, including broadcasters ABC, CBS, and cable channels Fox News, Bravo, and ESPN. A nine-member board led by former Walt Disney International chairman, Brad Bird, will oversee the joint company. The companies will continue to offer Fubo and Hulu + Live TV as separate services available through their respective apps. Disney’s investment plans were announced in January, when much smaller Fubo sued Disney and two other media companies over plans to launch a high-profile streaming joint venture, Venu Sports. Fubo argued that the collaboration of Disney, Fox Corporation and Warner Brothers Discovery was “a sports cartel” that would destroy its business. A judge agreed based on antitrust concerns, stopping further development of Venu. Disney’s deal to take a 70% stake in New York-based Fubo has brought that case to an end. Fubo Chief Executive David Gandler, who co-founded the service, and Fubo’s management team will lead the combined business. “Since founding fubo a decade ago, our vision has always been to create a consumer-first streaming platform defined by innovation and value,” Gandler said in a statement. “Together with Disney, we are building a more flexible streaming ecosystem that offers consumers even more choice while promoting profitability and sustainable growth.” Fubo’s ad sales team will join Disney’s sales organization. The company’s stock will continue to trade publicly under the ticker FUBO. Current Fubo shareholders represent about 30% of the company. Shares were up slightly in afternoon trading at $3.95.
