The company said the cuts include 1,200 workers at the company’s electric vehicle plant in Detroit and another 550 workers at its Ultium Cells battery cell plant in Ohio. The company is also temporarily laying off approximately 850 workers at the Ohio plant and another 700 in Tennessee, GM confirmed to Fast Company. This comes after the expiration earlier this month of federal electric vehicle (EV) tax credits of up to $7,500 after President Donald Trump signed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA). Automakers are now bracing for a decline in U.S. EV sales. “In response to near-term slowing EV adoption and evolving regulatory requirements, GM is restructuring EV capacity,” the company said in an emailed statement to Fast Company. “Despite these changes, GM remains committed to our U.S. manufacturing footprint, and we believe that our investments and dedication to agile operations will enable GM to become even more nimble and lead through change.” Affected workers may be eligible for SUB pay and benefits per the GM-UAW national agreement, GM said.
