A large group of former UCLA football players sent a letter earlier this month to Chancellor Julio Frenk, calling for the replacement of Athletic Director Martin Jarmond in order to “re-establish the university’s commitment to excellence on and off the field.” The letter stated that despite having the resources, history, and opportunity, “Mr. Jarmond has not demonstrated the leadership or vision commensurate with UCLA’s proud tradition, and rather than building upon the foundation of greatness established by his predecessors, his tenure has failed to advance UCLA to its rightful place among the nation’s premier programs.” The letter continued, “Unfortunately, Mr. Jarmond has not embodied these values, nor has he prepared UCLA Athletics to reach the standard its history demands.”

The letter called for new leadership, stating it was part of a movement “bigger than any one of us.” The former players have “coalesced through countless calls, texts and meetings to further this cause. We stand united in our commitment to protecting the proud legacy of UCLA Football and Athletics.” A UCLA spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Jarmond has faced criticism since the athletic director’s handling of the football program after only 15 games with the dismissal of coach DeShaun Foster, whom Jarmond exposed the leadership of. The refusal to dismiss Foster, an Ohio State coordinator, in February 2024, who completely showed deficiencies as a head coach while posting a 5-10 record this season, led others to criticize Jarmond’s broader shortcomings, including inadequate responses to leaked donor information, a lack of consistent success, and the department’s lack of success. The cause has gained 1,462 signatures and a billboard stating “UCLA Football Deserves $7 Million Buyout.”

The cause was given at a time when UCLA was transitioning from outgoing Chancellor Gene Block to Frenk, where Jarmond’s $7 million contract would come into play if he were to be let go without cause through June 30, 2029. It appears many people flew banners over the stadium before each of the team’s last two home games at the Rose Bowl calling for his dismissal.
