It seems Black Friday sales have started early in the UK, with retailers like AO offering deals. AO currently has the standard iPhone 16 (128GB storage) for £649 (down from £699). At this price, the iPhone 16 is only slightly more expensive than Apple’s budget smartphone, the iPhone 16e, which retails for £599 directly from Apple. However, AO also has the larger 256GB iPhone 16e available for £649 (down from £699) – the same price as the iPhone 16 – making the decision a bit tougher. I’m here to say that the iPhone 16 is the better buy in this head-to-head competition, but before I explain why, let’s take a closer look at these early discounts.
Both the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16e feature a 6.1-inch display with a 60Hz refresh rate, a 48MP main camera, and an assignable Action button on the left side. Inside, both have the Apple A18 chipset and 8GB of RAM to support Apple Intelligence. The iPhone 16e actually has slightly better battery life than the iPhone 16, but its advantages end there.
The iPhone 16, on the other hand, gains an additional 12MP ultrawide camera, a dedicated Camera control button for photos and videos, and an extra GPU core for graphics processing. The iPhone 16 also has a brighter display with the Dynamic Island, a combined hardware and software feature that lets you keep track of timers, music, and other apps while multitasking (the iPhone 16e has a notched display borrowed from the iPhone 14). Additionally, the iPhone 16 supports MagSafe, Apple’s magnetic wireless charger and accessory ecosystem. So, if you like wireless charging, the iPhone 16 is for you.
You can read our full iPhone 16 review and iPhone 16e review for more details. Admittedly, the pair aren’t vastly different in terms of functionality – but at £649, I’d still opt for the iPhone 16’s richer feature set, improved photography capabilities, and the convenience of Dynamic Island.
That’s not to say the iPhone 16e is a bad phone in any way – in fact, it’s one of the best cheap phones you can buy – and it could be a smart choice if you really need the extra space for storing photos, videos and apps, as long as you consider its limitations too.
