Magic Leap and Google have new hardware to show off. The prototype’s technical specs are similar to the Ray-Ban Meta glasses. There’s no word yet on a potential launch date. There’s some buzz around Android XR (Extended Reality) at the moment: Samsung’s Galaxy XR headset has just been officially unveiled, and now Google and Magic Leap are showcasing a prototype pair of Android XR-powered smart glasses. Yes, this is the same Magic Leap that released several augmented reality headsets years ago, which generated a lot of hype but ultimately didn’t become a hit. Now, the company is trying again, partnering with Google.
As reported by Android Authority and others, the smart glasses were demoed at the Future Investment Initiative in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This is the first hardware we’ve seen from the Google and Magic Leap partnership that was announced last year.
According to a press release, the device combines Magic Leap waveguides and optics with Google’s Raxium microLED light engine, allowing visuals to be placed in front of the user’s eyes, and multimodal artificial intelligence functionality, “Magic Leap” says. One example shown on stage was rug shopping: smart professionals can analyze the rugs in sight and get answers to questions about them. The glasses also feature cameras, microphones, and speakers, very similar to what we saw with Google’s Project Iris glasses and the Ray-Ban Meta glasses.
