When the stakes are so high, it’s natural for fans to cling to their superstitions, says Steve Joordens, a psychology professor at the University of Toronto. The story below: Superstitions are common to people in situations where they have very little control over an outcome that they deeply care about. Superstitions provide an “illusion of control” because some rituals can affect how things actually behave, Joordens said. The bigger the fan, the more anxiety they have going through the game. These rituals are a way to manage that anxiety, which brings some control power,” he said. More videos in sports For Joordens, it makes sense that baseball would attract fans who can famously be superstitious, in terms of the number of rituals within the game itself.
