During a screening of Wicked in 2024, influencer Tricia Mpisi was doused in champagne after an accident. Mpisi said Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande helped clean her up and cheered her up after the spill. The influencer thanked the actresses for their help, saying, “They are really kind people.” Sometimes, an uncomfortable experience can change you forever. South African influencer Tricia Mpisi, who attended an early screening of Wicked in 2024, detailed how Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande came to her rescue after an unfortunate incident resulted in a glass of champagne spilling all over her. In a TikTok recounting the experience, posted on Thursday, Mpisi said she was “so excited” to see the film and meet the actresses behind Elphaba and Glinda. “Until it was time to take a group photo,” she explained. “As we say ‘cheese,’ this glass spills on your head.” In the video capturing the event, Erivo can be heard yelling: “We need organization right now!” Cynthia Erivo, Tricia Mpisi, and Ariana Grande at the ‘Wicked’ screening. Tricia Mpisi/Instagram Mpisi recalled her panic as the chaos unfolded. “I looked down and saw something breaking, and then I felt something warm going into my eyes.” She remembers thinking “and I have mascara and makeup on.” Though it didn’t melt immediately, the champagne still felt hot. “The alcohol in the mascara stung my eyes,” Mpisi explained. “And I am a crier and a scaredy cat, okay? I don’t know what’s happening, I can’t see, and I’m starting to panic a little bit.” But fortunately, Mpisi was offered a helping hand. “As I’m closing my eyes and stinging, I felt someone grab me and say, ‘This is Cynthia Erivo. Now, I’m going to get you a chair, okay? It’s going to be okay,'” she recalled. “I didn’t know it was champagne at the time. All I know is, it could be acid, right?” Mpisi went on to explain that someone sat her in a chair while Erivo held onto her. “I was struggling to open my eyes, and it felt like someone was wiping my eyes and hands,” she remembers. “I hear their voices, and I obviously know Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande’s voices. They were both so sweet and kind and took the time to comfort me until I felt better and started laughing.” The influencer did lament the champagne stains on her outfit. “There was a part of me that was like, ‘Oh no, I hate that my outfit is ruined. Now we have to go to the premiere,'” she said. Then the Good Witch of the North intervened. “Ariana Grande says, ‘Don’t worry, you can cancel the premiere.'” Mpisi said. “And then I started laughing. ‘Really? You can cancel the premiere for me?’ And she says, ‘Yeah, I know the guy.'” “It’s literally Ariana Grande cleaning me up.” Get your daily fix of entertainment news, celebrity updates, and all things must-see with EW’s Dispatch newsletter. Mpisi further added that Erivo made sure that there was no champagne present before the screening started. “She made sure there was no alcohol anywhere,” the influencer said of the Widow star. “And when I calmed down, she looked at me and said, ‘It’s okay.’ And I was like, ‘It’s okay.'” Mpisi said they weren’t used to strangers attending to one another’s needs. “I live in South Africa, and people will literally watch someone get robbed and say, ‘Oh, it’s not my problem,’ or they won’t want to intervene for their own safety,” she explained. “So for Cynthia and Ariana to do what they did meant a lot to me. I think they are really kind people.” She continued, “You turned the most embarrassing moment into the most memorable human moment of my life. So, I’m really grateful for your kindness, and I will remember it for a long time. If you do ever see Cynthia Erivo or Ariana Grande, I am so grateful for making me feel better.”
