Pat Cummins ruled out of first Ashes Test

The first match of the 2025/26 Ashes series against England, starting in Perth on November 21st, will be without Australia’s Test captain Pat Cummins. Pat Cummins has been ruled out of the first Ashes Test. Cummins has not played any competitive cricket since the Test series in the West Indies in July. Reports of his potential absence from the first Ashes Test surfaced in early September due to a “lumbar bone stress” requiring workload management. Cricket Australia has now confirmed that Cummins will not be fit in time for the first Test, with Steve Smith leading the side in his absence. “Cummins has commenced running again and is expected to return to bowling soon,” the statement added.

There has been no official update on who will replace Cummins in the starting lineup. However, Scott Boland has been the de facto replacement fast bowler for Australia for some time. Australian coach Andrew McDonald also confirmed the same: “Losing your captain is not ideal, but when you talk about potential replacements with someone like Scott Boland, it’s not a bad situation to be in.”

‘Hopefully for the second Test match’ “We reported on it probably a week or so ago that it would take around about four weeks to turn around and we are running out of time, but we are really hopeful and optimistic for the second Test match,” McDonald told the media. “So I think the next question is, what’s the timeframe? What does that look like for the second Test? We can’t really answer that until he gets back into bowling this week and that’s a big step. That’s the big variable that we wanted to add and get that information. So we’re on that second Test journey and we’re just hopeful to see how positive he is. And then we’ll make decisions moving forward. I know that sounds really frustrating and everyone wants a time frame and what are the risks associated with it. There are better people than me to be able to speculate what that is.”

“There’s never going to be a definitive timeline given the nature of this injury and I think that’s what everyone’s trying to say here today and it has to be. We’re not in a position to do it and I wouldn’t put the medical team under that kind of pressure either.”

“I think you get excited when he comes back in, that Pat’s fully injected back into the Ashes and that’s what we’re hoping for. It’ll almost be one of those things where you’ll see him in action and the question will almost be why isn’t he playing in Perth? That’s where we think he’ll be positioned at that time, so we’re excited to see him bowl.”
