Guillaume Lavrut took this photo while visiting Aurillac, a small French town, with his wife and three children. The family was looking for souvenirs and walking down the street together when they came across a canopy of umbrellas. Aurillac is home to one of the oldest umbrella factories in the world, and many consider it the umbrella capital of Europe. But for Lavrut, visiting Aurillac meant coming home.

Following the promotion in the newsletter, Lavrut said, “My family is from there, so we go there every summer. It’s so hard to get there that it takes at least a day to arrive, but it’s worth it.” Its calm, relaxing atmosphere offers something different from their home in Paris and Nantes. “Capital life is busy, Nantes is also sometimes crowded, but Aurillac is lost in the mountains and nature is omnipresent.”
As his wife and children went into the store, Lavrut’s attention was drawn to the reflection of the umbrellas in a puddle. It had been raining that day, but the sky had cleared, and the sun was shining. He stepped back to capture it on his phone and then edited the light using the VSCO app. “The perfect blue sky and the rainbow of colors reminded me of my childhood and the pond we used to jump into,” Lavrut said. “I felt like I had found a little portal in a peaceful place.”
