You can now listen to Fox News articles! Conservative businessman and broadcaster John Reid used artificial intelligence to represent Democratic opponent Ghazala Hashmi in a mock debate for the 2025 Lieutenant Governor’s race. Reid, the Republican candidate from Richmond, challenged state Senator Hashmi of Chesterfield to a series of regional debates across Virginia. Reid noted that Hashmi was the only one of the six candidates running for statewide office who refused to debate. Reid’s representative confirmed that the AI only generated Hashmi’s appearance and voice – and the moderator’s voice – and that the responses attributed to Hashmi’s representative were based on her previous quotes or political positions. Hashmi’s campaign called the video a “deep fake” and told The Washington Post that it was a “desperate” move “straight out of the Donald Trump playbook.” While we appreciate that “AI Ghazala” shared her perspectives, such as her commitment to public education and reproductive rights, very clearly, the campaign added that “Reid only cares about bad tactics and a lack of judgment.” The debate on artificial intelligence differs from other artificially created videos, where, in some cases, legislators’ words and presentations were caricatured. President Donald Trump shared a viral AI video earlier this month of Hakeem Jeffries, D-NY., wearing a sombrero with the song “La Cucaracha” playing in the background and Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer, D-NY. referred to his team as “pieces” at a Melania Trump AI meeting at the White House. In her opening statement in the debate, Hashmi said she was running because Virginians “need someone with the experience, knowledge and ability to fight for Virginians.” “I am willing to create a policy that will make Virginia an example to others.” In response, Reid noted that – in real life – Hashmi would not appear at a real debate. “Resorting to artificial intelligence tools to revive the magic of Hollywood movies,” he said. “If she is not willing to participate in her own campaign for lieutenant governor, I don’t know why anyone would think that she would be able to fight for anything.” “Push women’s sports over boys… raise taxes (and) let criminals out early.” “Whatever issues we consider in the state of Virginia, Ghazala Hashmi, this is what she said about this job for Congress, ‘She said to Congress for Congress to champion. And what the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and radio understand helps them understand what companies need from state government if they want to do business in Virginia.
